Back to Schools

Many churches operated church schools over the years. This page shows available enrollment numbers and the schools operating during various school years. More frequent reports are shown during the early years when many of these small churches and schools were still quite unstable, as the Adventist message slowly spread throughout the South. There were several of the early years that Louisiana did not have any church schools. In 1975, there were nineteen schools and by 1984, that number had doubled to thirty-eight schools (St. John, 1980). Enrollment peaked in 1976 for Ozark Adventist Academy when Oklahoma became a constituent; it peaked in 1984 for grades K-10 schools. In the years that followed, the number of schools and students enrolled gradually began to decline but has remained stable for the past eighteen years.

(Records from 1902 to 1933 are based on the extant copies of the Seventh-day Adventist Yearbook, reports sent to the General Conference and articles sent to the Review and Herald, the Southern Union Worker and the Southwestern Union Record. These records do not always agree with each other, but are compiled as accurately as possible. Records from 1933 to present are documented by school superintendents and records at the Arkansas-Louisiana Conference Office of Education.)
